About Fifth Word

Fifth Word is a leading East Midlands new writing company, established in 2007. We are dedicated to discovering, developing and producing the most exciting playwrights of today, and to working in-depth with under-served communities to empower them to tell their own stories.

We produce and tour critically-acclaimed new plays that shine a light on today's issues and experiences, telling stories that connect particularly with younger audiences (14-25) and under-represented communities across the UK.

We nurture regional voices and the next generation of talent; engaging in a thoughtful, rigorous and bespoke development process with each writer that we work with. The plays we make are bold, accessible and urgent: they amplify the stories of those who can often go unheard or easily slip through the cracks in society. We aim to shift perspectives and foster a love of theatre by harnessing its power for storytelling and human connection. We want our audiences to be deeply moved and newly attuned to the experiences of others.

Our flagship engagement projects are created in collaboration with a range of communities: empowering them to create their own narratives through different artistic mediums. These partnership projects are driven by the desire to foster creative ambition, develop new talent and celebrate their voices.

Fifth Word are former associate artists of Oxford Playhouse and a former associate company of Nottingham Playhouse.

"Winning the Writers' Guild Olwen Wymark Encouragement Award for developing new writing gave Fifth Word national recognition. Its nurturing of this play is exemplary"
