Information for Playwrights

Fifth Word works with both upcoming and established playwrights. We commission writers we already have a relationship with or select scripts from open submissions. We are often attracted to work that has a darker edge to it or timely pieces drawing on contemporary political and social themes. Our previous work has appealed to younger audiences and this is reflected in the venues and festivals we tour to.

We are keen to discover new talent and occasionally host 'scratch evenings' for new work in progress. From these we choose pieces to be developed further ready for touring.

We welcome scripts from playwrights for consideration in future productions. If you are interested in submitting work, please refer to our guidance notes below.

Notes for submission:

Fifth Word is interested in writers who have a story that they passionately want to tell and that can only be told through the unique power of theatre.

Either full length or single-act works are acceptable. Cast sizes should be kept relatively small (i.e. under five). Please send a hard copy to our postal address. Due to a high volume of submissions we regret we are unable to promise individual feedback or return scripts to you.

During summer 2015 we ran the Most Promising Playwright Competition for emerging playwrights in the East Midlands. Fifth Word intend to run this fantastic opportunity biannually. More information about the 2015 competition is available on our dedicated minisite.
